The following links will take you to some of my
favorite people and their companies. Please check them out!
The Mount Desert Island Marathon – One of my favorites. And it’s in Maine … in scenic, fall-colored October. Rated most scenic by Runners World and runner-up overall.
Donald Steel.com – My favorite golf course architect lives in England but designs courses all over the world. He also has an equally prolific golfing resume, having won and competed in major tournaments. And, having written on golf for the London Telegraph, he’s had the pleasure of covering 32 Opens (British Opens, in American lingo). Arnold Palmer won the first two that Donald covered. Must have been something, eh? He’s also authored several fine books on links golf.
Golfweek magazine – I read a lot of books and publications, mostly in random order – a chapter or few pages here and there. But my Golfweek magazine gets prime billing. I find the articles informative and the news current, both in the print and online editions. And I don’t have to read about a “new” way to drive or chip or putt.
Road ID – This runner-friendly company makes many products designed to keep runners safe while on the road.
RaceTrackers - This company makes promotional embroidered caps, running caps, technical running shirts, cotton shirts, hats, visors, golf gloves, jackets, polo shirts and golf towels. They have supplied our Bashful Ostrich 5K for many years with excellent products at low prices.
Islay Woollen Mill - Don’t miss a tour of the Islay Woollen Mill that made the tartans for the movies Braveheart and War Horse: the original building dates to 1550 and the bridge you’ll drive over was built in 1711 for seven quid. And, if you didn’t win a Braveheart tartan in the Challenge, you can buy one here.
If you’re on Islay, be sure to stop in at the Bowmore Hotel – either for a drink (they have over 700 choices of single malt) or a meal. Highly recommended.
These Islay single malt distilleries have kindly supported our marathon. Give them a try. They are available in most countries.
Laphroaig – The favorite of the Prince of Wales.
Kilchoman – Islay's only independent, locally-owned distillery.
Bruichladdich – Go here for a glimpse of Ileachs in action.
Ardbeg – Home of the famous racing jacket and the old kiln café.
The Ileach newspaper is worth the £25 online subscription.
A good description of Islay’s many beaches and walks.
A local guide can take you on a tour of the famous island.
A great photoblog for a virtual tour of Islay.
